Reduction

Reduction

Breast reduction is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures. Symptoms of hypermastia (large breasts) include shoulder pain and grooving, back and neck pain, headaches, difficulty with sporting activities etc. Some women get rashes under the breasts and have difficulty finding clothing. Breast reduction surgery decreases the weight and volume of the breasts while at the same time lifting the breast to give it a more youthful and aesthetic appearance. This surgery is currently covered by OHIP for those women with significant symptoms. The big trade-off with this surgery is having scars on the breast. Some women also experience change in sensation (which may be permanent) and shooting pains which subside over the course of the year.

Complications of this surgery include wound healing problems, infection, asymmetry and bleeding (hematoma). Risk of healing problems can be minimized by avoiding smoking and being a healthy weight.

The scars from breast reduction surgery in Dr Fortin’s hands are generally in the anchor pattern (around the nipple, down the front of the breast and in the crease beneath the breast). With this technique she is able to get a consistent perky shape of breast which is long-lasting. The scars fade over the course of the year.
